Apple Accused Of Breaking iPhone 4s

Did Apple carelessly ruin millions of iPhone 4s units with the upgrade to iOS 9?  A $5 million class action lawsuit has been filed on behalf of iPhone 4S owners saying that the update significantly slowed down their phones, making them buggy and unusable despite claiming that the iOS 9 upgrade was compatible with the iPhone 4S.

Further, the suit says Apple does not warn customer that their updates are irreversible. The suit implies that Apple’s intention was to push users into buying new iPhones.

Amazon Doubles Device Sales

It was a happy holiday season for the folks at Amazon. The company doubled sales of its devices like the Kindle eReader and the Fire Tablet over last year.

The Fire tablet was the companies best seller, followed by the Fire TV streaming device.  Also popular was the company’s smart home hub, Amazon Echo.

AT & T Ends Two-Year Plans

Starting today, AT & T is ending its standard 2-year plan where you paid off the cost of your phone and your monthly services over the course of a two-year plan.

From here on, customers will sign up for the Next program. This is more of lease. You pay a monthly fee to rent your phone and after you make a certain number payments, you can trade it in for a newer model.

This will mean no money down on phones with the Next plan, but you don’t end up owning the device. If you already have a contract in place, this won’t affect the terms of your current contract.

  1. I have been using iPhone 4s for several years, now upgraded to ios 9.2; my handset is running as smoothly as like before.
Rather Apple should address to these problems on its unnecessarily high proced products:
    1. Increase the battery backup which should last, at least, 24 hours
    2. Add a ‘back’ button which will save the ‘home’ button,
    3. Add an LED indicator for battery charging and message/mail notifications.

  2. I do believe Apple deliberately screwed up the iPhone 4s. Mine did not work properly after the last update and I was forced to purchase a newer phone.

  3. I am undecided. My son is still using my old iPhone 4s with all upgrades. It runs a little slower than an iPhone 5s we have but not much, a lot slower than my 6 plus. I think it’s more of a memory issue.

  4. Mine was also performing poorer in every respect. I was not thinking about the updates, only thought it passed it’s best-before date.
However, I replaced it with a Galaxy s6!

  5. Cynthia, AT&T’s next plan us not a lease it is an installment payment plan that does let you upgrade part way through essentially using the equity in your phone to trade it in on a new one. But if you keep paying for the full term, 12 to 24 months then you do own the phone. See a quote from their terms statementioned below.

AT&T Next offers well-qualified buyers the choice to purchase a smartphone for $0 down, dividing the regular price of a smartphone into low monthly installment payments. Qualified buyers also have the option to make a down payment up front, dividing the remaining cost into monthly installment payments.

  6. My 4s has been a beautiful phone, and I have been very happy with it. Note the past tense “have been”! It is noticeably slower since the latest upgrade. I don’t think this is accidental. When looking for a replacement I shall certainly consider non-Apple products.

  7. I have a different complaint. Mine is an iPhone 5. Recent updates have added apps that cannot be removed, and which I neither want nor use. They’re taking up enough memory that I’ve had to delete apps I DO want just to take a picture. I suspect the reason is so that the next time I upgrade, I’ll buy a phone with additional memory.

  8. My 4s phone is totally not working right since that last two updates. It is running so slow can’t open some emails. It’s always buffering. I’ve had nothing but problems since I owned this phone. When I can I will buy a non apple product.

  9. Apple does this all the time! Not only with their phones. Just yesterday, I was forced to update a MacBook from 10.6 to 10.8 and it uses all of the memory up on the machine. I either have the option of updating the RAM or purchasing a new computer. I also sent in a wireless keyboard for an iMac yesterday covered under Apple Care. They sent me their newest keyboard (Magic Keyboard) that’s only compatible with the newest version of Mac OS 10.11. We’re talking about a keyboard here! It never stops with this company!

  10. Yes, I’m very disappointed with the so called “upgrade”. I use to love my 4s but the upgrade has made it so buggy I hate to use it for anything but just phone calls. The answer calls button doesn’t even work right sometimes.

  11. I have 2 kids that had 4S and both had issues and all I heard was I need a new phone this one is to slow. Apple won that battle they both got new IPhones. I am a Nexus phone guy, phone is over 2 years old and the updates still work fine.

  12. AT&T is following T-Mobile just like Sprint did and Verizon did to a degree. There are many haters of T-Mobile but they have changed the way cell phones are sold and contracts. The last 2 phones I got(T-Mobile)(for the kids) are least (18 months) which means I can upgrade those phones up to 3 time a year every year, Now each time I upgrade the least goes back to 18 months again, or you can buy the least out and keep the phone.

  13. MY iphone 4s couldn’t even get all the necessary updates because of the lack of space so I got a Samsung 6+ edge, apple can keep their iphone.

  14. I’ve always been with ATT. We switched to the new plan over a year ago. It is slightly less convenient in that you can’t switch phones without a big balloon payment until your current device is paid off. My grandson’s toddler dropped his phone in the toilet about six months ago and he’s been forced to use a cheap pay as you go substitute until the old one is paid off since he can’t afford to pay it all at once. As a result of his experience, the rest of us have taken out insurance on ours.

However, I think you are mistaken about this being a lease plan. As it was explained to me, I will own the phone once it is payed off and will not have to replace it if I don’t want to and will have no device charges until I decide to get a new phone. That’s more like a time purchase plan.

In my opinion, the old method was more like a loan with a small deposit required up front, depending on which phone you wanted. Now, I am actually buying my 6s. I guess the lease idea comes from the fact that you are supposed to in the old phone, in good condition, if you want to get a new one before the payoff date.

  15. Yes, I do feel upgrades were not entirely compatible with 4. My husband is limping along with his 4 until eligible for upgrade. Phones should last longer than 2 years!

  16. Apple does this to all their phones as a way to get people to buy new phones. I also think that AT&T and the others carriers are in on it too. This promotes new phone sales, and new contracts.

Just like the phone carriers can lock and prevent a phone from working with activation lock if they wanted to. I used to work for the phone company (name withheld) in the netops dept, we have ability to make it so phones can not ever be activated if stolen. Why don’t they enable it? Because they don’t want to locate your old phone, they want you to buy new.

  17. I had trouble with the update as well and ended up having to go to the Apple store to get it fixed, which they did, with no problems afterward. I did upgrade to a new phone afterward, but not because of that. I think the update was definitely not compatible with the iPhone4. But I don’t think it was intentional on their part.

  18. I have a 4S and did the update and the phone not working well at all. Sometimes the buttons don’t respond, finally after several button pushing it will open. It is slow now. I am ready to get rid of the phone, but what to get? I don’t trust Apple anymore.

  19. My I=phone4 was so buggy and non-responsive I finally gave up and bought a 5. This make sense now its being brought to light.

  20. I have had several issues with my 4S since the update and just assumed it was from lack of storage. I am constantly reminded to go to settings to manage my storage. My Inbox for Windows Live Mail always says that there are unopened emails but, when I check, they have all been opened. It worked fine before the update.

  21. I think they did the same thing with the tablet. Went to IOS 9 and nothing but crashes. Went to the store 2 x’s and had to wait 2 hours to get to talk to some one.
Still crashes about 3 times every hours. If fixed the problem. Went and bought a Samsung Galaxy!

  22. How to follow the people who filed the class action as my wifi failed beyond repair when I upgraded and Apple store refused to change the phone.

  23. I had an Apple 4 and it would not upgrade at all. So, I was forced to buy a new phone! Curiously, I bought an iPad Mini in 2013 (summer) and it updates just fine. So this lawsuit regarding the Apple 4s, would it apply to those of us who had a 4?

  24. Yes Yes Yes! I have had nothing but problems from day one with this phone. It is worse with every upgrade I do and the last upgrade I just did even though I didn’t want to but they kept harassing me daily to do it every time I used my phone. I think they should replace these phones with new ones just for all the headaches I’ve had and still have with it. It constantly buffers on me when I’m trying to read links. I end up deleting it and can’t read it. I would buy another phone if I could afford it but it wont be an apple.

  25. They seem to be the ultimate control freaks. If they didn’t make any money from any changes you made, they’ll spit the dummy and ruin your machine first chance they get (via “updates”) Good luck to the class action group!
