Win 10 Start Menu Trouble – Should I Re-Install 8?

Rosie is having issues with her Windows 10 Start Menu:   “I have been having trouble with the start menu in windows 10 not opening for me, I was wondering since I made a copy of Windows 8 can I just reinstall it? Or should I uninstall 10 and redownload and reinstall it?? Any help would be appreciated.”

I would not suggest reinstalling Windows 8. That would overwrite everything on your PC and then you’d have to go through the hassle of upgrading to Windows 8.1 and then applying the 8.1.1 update.  Instead, I would suggest creating a new user account. Click here for instructions. Sometimes corrupt user settings are to blame when the Start Menu won’t open.

If that doesn’t work, and you’ve installed Windows 10 in the past 30 days, you can revert back to the previous operating system.

Another option would be to refresh your PC. You can find out more about that here.

  1. Couple of questions. Does she mean she only gets the tiles to open or that the start button does not work? Did she set up a Microsoft account? If not, I’ve seen upgraded systems that, when not set up with a Microsoft account, the system does’t work quite right. Cortana doesn’t work properly, live tiles do not work, no access to the Microsoft Store. I volunteer at our local computer club and we have been helping our members do the upgrade since October. Eight of us got together and did the upgrade in August and determined the best procedures for others to do the upgrade. Then in September we trained out other volunteers and then began helping our members in October.

    If the tiles are opening, she needs to go into settings and turn off the Start with Tiles setting. Then the start menu will open AND she’ll see the tiles.

    The other thing we recommend is that EVERYONE run in Standard User mode and have that account associated with the Microsoft account. Then have the Administrative User mode be a local account …. above all DON’T FORGET YOUR PASSWORD!

    peace and good luck ‘-}

  2. I noticed you suggested a p c refresh but not a systems restore. Is it possible the problem could have been caused by the update? I have found several times that with a update the settings sometimes get changed and restoring the system to an earlier date corrects that kind of problem.

  3. I too am having problems with losing the start menu PLUS losing right clicking ability with Win 10. I found it to be caused by the updates. Never had a problem with Win 8 and updates. My computer runs great UNTIL the upgrades are downloaded and installed. So what I did (I know it’s not good to do) is to disable updates. Haven’t had a problem since, and it’s been 3 months. Reinstalled Win 10 6 times and every time it updated I would lose my start menu and right clicking ability. My neighbor lost her mouse and keyboard after updating on her new DELL all-in-one computer with Win 10. Two USB ports were disabled by the updates. Luckily she has four ports. I reset her PC. Then after the updates later on, it would happen again. So, I reset it again but this time I disabled updates for her hoping that later on Microsoft will correct the problem updates. So far, she says her PC is running good with the updates turned off. Time will tell if it will stay that way.
