Reader’s Tip: Save On Windows 10 Upgrade

In response to a question about upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 10, Dave wrote: “It’s true you can not upgrade from vista to windows 10 for free, although you can purchase Windows 7 with the product key, install it and then upgrade to Windows 10 as long as your system meets the requirements for windows 7 and 10. I have seen Windows 7 for $40. Yes, it’s a long process but certainly worth the benefits of Windows 10.”

What a great idea Dave!  If you can find a deal on Windows 7 and have the time and patience to install Windows 7, perform all the updates and then upgrade to Windows 10, you could save quite a bit of money. The real catch there is how much is your time worth? If we do this all at once, we’re looking at an all-day deal. My only caution is to make sure that copy of Windows 7 is a genuine copy.

  1. Actually, you won’t need all the Windows 7 upgrades installed before moving on to Windows 10. I’ve done about a dozen Vista computers here that way. As long as you have Windows 7 SP1, no more updates should be necessary to run the Windows 10 upgrade. (I use the media creation tool for Windows 10 and put the installer on a flash drive – faster upgrades that way.)

  2. Great idea. How about all the XP users. Can they upgrade to W7 then go for the W10 upgrade? Or are there some technical reasons where XP platforms are not compatible, system wise, for the W10 upgrade?

    1. If your current computer is capable of handling Windows 7 and Windows 10, you certainly could install Windows 7 (remember, though, it would be a clean install) and then upgrade to Windows 10.

  3. Yes that is what I did with 1 of my desk top PC that was running windowsXP I found a genuine copy of windows 7 on Ebay for $50 just make sure the seller has good feedback and I took the Ebay route so I would be protected with my buyers protection just in case and it worked out great suggestion before purchasing windows7 for witch ever PC your wanting to upgrade first check and see if that PC can handel windows10 they had some links a while back when the whole windows10 upgrading thing came out that would allow you to see if your PC could handel windows10 do that 1st before purchasing any version ofwindows7 that way you don’t waste any money if that PC can’t handel windows10 but hey if it can’t I would still upgrade it to windows7 if it can handel it that way you would have protection on that PC either way ok. nice to see that someone else did what I did and it was not to bad and I am totally blind and if I can do it come on anybody can LOL!
