A group message in Facebook can be a great way to get information out about an event, but it can also lead to a heck of a lot of annoying notifications.
A group message could cover anything from an invitation to Thanksgiving to updates on Grandma’s medical crisis. If you aren’t interested at all, you can just leave a conversation. But what if you want to stay informed? You want to get the updates on Grandma, but just not while you’re in a meeting or you want to shut them off to get some sleep. I’m going to show you how you can temporarily shut off those notifications.
Open Facebook in your browser. Then click on Messages and select the group message.

Open the message. Since there are 16 people on this message, every time someone comments or asks a question, you’ll get a notification. Tap that gear symbol in the top left next to the X.

Choose Mute Conversation from the drop-down menu. If you don’t mind being out of the loop forever, you can choose Leave Conversation.

You can choose to mute the conversation for an hour, until the morning or until you choose to turn it back on. That means the chat window won’t pop up to show you the conversation. This also mutes the conversation on your phone.

When you open the conversation, you’ll see a notice that it’s been muted. You can unmute with one click.
