Skype is an extremely popular video callingĀ  program used by millions of people. It’s a great, free program. But with that free service comes ads. Sometimes those ads can be extremely annoying while you’re trying to make an important call.

Luckily, there IS a way to remove these ads. Even though it is not a built-in option, and a little tinkering will be required, the steps are fairly easy. This article will show you the steps to a cleaner and ad-free Skype environment. This Tutorial is intended for most of the newer versions of Windows.

Open Control Panel and click on Network and Internet.

Open internet options.

Go to the Security Tab and click on restricted sites click on the Restricted sites button.

Add apps.skype.com and g.msn.com to the list.

Close the window and click apply and then open Windows Explorer. Go to the hard drive on your PC where Skype is installed. (It’s likely C:) and click to open.

Scroll down and select Users.

Click on the name of the user.

You’ll need to check View Hidden Items at the top of the window that opens, then scroll down to App Data.

Open App Data and then click on Roaming.

Click on Skype, and then click on the file that is labeled with your Skype username.

Find a file called config. (It is an XML file). Right click it and choose open with notepad.

On your keyboard, click ctrl and F simultaneously. In the text box that shows up, type AdvertPlaceholder. A piece of code that says the following should show up. <AdvertPlaceholder>1</AdvertPlaceholder>

Change the 1 in the middle to 0.

Click on file in the upper-left corner and hit save. Restart Skype for the changes to take effect.

Congratulations, you have successfully removed the advertisements from Skype!
