My friend Denise actually posted this question on Facebook, but I decided to steal it and use it here.

“Does anyone know if you have a smart TV and Amazon Prime, already is there anything beneficial about having the Fire Stick?”

First, let’s talk about just what a smart TV actually is.  It’s like TV with a great big tablet built in. You use a remote instead of a touchscreen to navigate, but like a tablet, it depends on an Internet connection and is capable fo running apps. What types of apps you can run on your TV depends on the manufacturer. A Fire Stick is really designed to be a low-cost substitute for a smart TV. If give you many of the same features you’d get with a much more expensive smart TV.

Usually, you’ll be able to run apps for services like Netflix, Showtime, Hulu, and Amazon Prime.

A Fire Stick is really designed to be a low-cost substitute for a smart TV. If give you many of the same features you’d get with a much more expensive smart TV.  You just plug it into the HDMI port on your television. Fire TV normally costs around $40, but sometimes will go on special for around $30.

There are two reasons you might consider a Fire Stick if you already have a smart TV.  If you have Amazon Prime and your TV doesn’t offer the Amazon Prime Video app, the Fire Stick would allow you to watch video programming.

Also, the Fire Stick does offer voice controls with the Alexa virtual assistant, so you can start apps or play programs without having to push any buttons. You’ll also be able to use Alexa for other tasks like playing your Prime Music or searching for information on the Internet.
