I have to admit that I was little disappointed when I first saw the Apple Watch. It’s a super-nice smart watch, but I was hoping for something more.  It was dependent on the user carrying an iPhone along with the watch. You couldn’t just make calls on it or stream music. It was a super-expensive iPhone accessory.  I wanted the watch of my sci-fi loving childhood dreams. I wanted Dick Tracy’s wrist communicator.  Well, Apple’s Series 3 watch finally begins to deliver on that promise.

The Series 3 Apple watch will allow you to make calls, send texts, and even stream music without having to take your iPhone along. You will have to pay a little extra for the version with the SIM card.  (SIM cards allow you to assign a phone number to a device and to make and receive phone calls and SMS text messages.)

Users will even be able to use the digital assistant Siri to set calendar reminders and give directions. You’ll also be able to receive alerts from apps, though not necessarily able to access the full app.

You can pop in Bluetooth headphones to listen to music or hear your calls.

There are also a number of great health-related features in this new watch. But I’ll tackle that in a separate article.  Series 3 with GPS and Cellular starts at $399 and can run as much as $1399 for the luxury Hermes model.

The watches are available for pre-order now and should be for sale on 9-22.
