Videos won’t play in Chrome

Here’s an issue that turns up sometimes in Google Chrome: Embedded videos won’t play on websites. Instead of video, you get a blank black box or sometimes even a colorful pink and green one.

Our first step is to make sure the issue is actually the browser. Try opening the same page in another browser like Firefox, Microsoft Edge, or Internet Explorer. If video works in these browsers and not with Chrome, you know the issue is indeed with Chrome. My first suggestion when any browser is acting wonky is to clear the cache. Click here to learn how to do that in Google Chrome. If that doesn’t help (and if you’re getting the pink and green video, it probably won’t), here’s what to try.

First, click the 3-dot menu icon on the upper-right side of the screen and choose Settings.

chrome-settings-drop-down

Then scroll down and choose Advanced Settings.

chrome-browser-advanced

Scroll down to System, then untick the box next to Use hardware acceleration when available.

chrome-uncheck-acceleration

That should take care of the problem.
