Can I keep USB ports hot?

A reader has a question about charging items via USB:

“Cyn, happy to hear you are staying healthy and safe.

I have a question that has been on my mind.. Is there a way to keep the USB ports ‘hot’ while the lid is closed on a laptop, without changing the power settings to nothing happening when you close the lid? There are times when I’d like to charge something overnight via a USB port, but don’t really like to keep the lid open all night long. Stay well Cyn.”

Thank you. You stay healthy and safe as well. My first thought is that you’re using the wrong tool for the job. While being able to power and charge USB devices is a handy feature of your computer, that’s not what it’s designed for.  So why put wear and tear, however minimal on your PC when buying a USB charger is easy and inexpensive.

Amazon has plenty of  USB chargers that plug into a wall outlet less than $10. And normally, you can find them even cheaper at big box stores, gas stations, grocery stores, and more. (That may be a challenge right now.)

My recommendation for you aside, you’ve suggested a great topic for some articles about your power management options.

You stay safe as well!
