I ran across this scammy pop-up today while doing some work online. It claims that I need to do a compatibility check before going to a website and says I’ll be given a chance to go to the Chrome Web Store and install an extension that will allow me to install a Chrome extension that provides safer searching. Sometimes the pop-up says the extension allows you do incognito searches.
What clicking on the button really does is install a browser hijacker that redirects all of your searches to a new home page. It disguises it by calling it Safer Search by Fire Shield.
This is not something that you need or want. If you see something like this, navigate away from it as soon as possible. Close the tab or close the browser if you have to.
