Backyard Nature

A Kenyan Proverb: “Treat the Earth well. It was not given to you by your parents. It was lent to you by your children.”

This is a super-simple old school site and I find the retro interface to be nostalgic and kind of refreshing. I loved this site’s section of: “101 nature orientated things to do this summer.” It is exactly that, a list of 101 different things that you could in nature. If you were to actually do these things you would also be very well orientated with this site because they do a good job of tying everything together.

The “3 Steps to Discovering Nature” section is very good as well. It walks your right through it. It will teach you to be a decent backyard naturalist.

I found all three of the lists: Plants, Animals, and Fungi in Your Backyard. I identified several of the trees around my house from their leaves and twigs. Not to mention that with the animal section I identified the birds that drive me crazy at six in the morning. I also found out that we have an opossum in our backyard.

This is a great guide to some outdoor fun this summer. You can even get the kids involved in an identification hunt! Wouldn’t that be great?
